Based on true events, Beyond the Hills tells the story of two girls who grew up together and who meet after several years of separation. Alina returned from Germany to take back with her Voichița, her childhood friend with whom she still feels attached. Voichița has found her way in life through faith and lives among nuns who are for her the family she never had. Alina is fighting with all means to win back Voichița's affection. Alina is perceived as a disturbing element in the religious community, and its priest and nuns try to cure her from the lack of God in her heart.
After winning the Palme d'Or in 2007, the Romanian film director Cristian Mungiu returned to Cannes this year to premiere Beyond the Hills, where he won the award for Best Screenplay and the two leading actresses, Stratan and Flutur, shared the award for Best Actress.
